Distribution Panel
A Distribution Panel, also known as a distribution board or panelboard, is an essential
component in an electrical system that divides an electrical power feed into subsidiary
circuits while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a common
enclosure. It ensures the safe and efficient distribution of electrical power throughout a
building or facility.
Components of a Distribution Panel
- Main Breaker: A large breaker that controls the power supply to the
entire panel and provides overcurrent protection for the panel.
- Bus Bars: Metal bars that distribute power to the branch circuit
breakers. They are typically made of copper or aluminum.
- Circuit Breakers/Fuses: Devices that provide overcurrent protection for
each branch circuit. Breakers can be reset, while fuses need to be replaced once they
blow.
- Neutral and Ground Bars: Terminals for connecting the neutral and
ground wires of the electrical system.
- Enclosure: A metal or plastic box that houses all the components and
provides physical protection and safety.
- Labels and Identification: Labels and markings that identify each
circuit and its corresponding breaker or fuse.
